Eligibility

  • Open to playwrights of all ages who have paid the $15 registration fee.
  • Play and payment must be submitted by February 15, 2025.

Theme

  • Plays should combine elements of drama and comedy, balancing both to create a compelling and entertaining story. The theme should provide young actors with acting challenges outside typical comedy or farce.

Length

  • Plays must have a runtime of 35 to 50 minutes.

Content

  • Must be suitable for children ages 7–17.
  • Content should be family-friendly and have an uplifting ending.

Submissions must include:

  • Stage directions
  • Lighting suggestions
  • Character list
  • Prop list
  • Suggested set and costume designs
  • Character Representation:
    • Cast should feature a mix of characters, providing equal opportunities for both dramatic
      and comedic moments.
    • Encourage diverse characters and scenarios that reflect various backgrounds and
      experiences.
    • Many characters should be adaptable for casting as either male or female.

Originality

  • Submissions must be original works created solely by the playwright.
  • Plagiarized or AI-generated content will not be accepted.

 

Submission Format

  • Submissions must be typed and clearly formatted in standard play format.
  • Include the play’s title and page numbers on each page.
  • Attach a separate title page with:
    • Title of the play
    • Author’s name
    • Contact information

Deadline

  • All entries must be submitted by February 15, 2025.

Judging Criteria:

  • Entries will be judged based on originality, creativity, balance of drama and
    comedy, character development, and overall impact.
  • See Rubric for specific criteria.
  • Judges will not know the playwright’s name, gender, or age.

Prizes:

  • First Place $250 Plus Play workshopped and performed for Spring Break Camp
  • Second Place $100 Rubric Feedback
  • Third Place $50 Rubric Feedback
  • Winners need not be present to receive prize, but we encourage the first place
    winner to come to the performance, though eligibility will not be based on this.

Performance:

  • Selected play will be workshopped during the GBT Spring Break Camp and will
    be performed with minimal costumes and set for the Camp Performance with
    author credit. Attendance at the event is free, but donations are encouraged.

Rights:

By entering, participants grant permission for their work to be showcased and
used for promotional purposes. Playwrights retain the FIRST RIGHTS with
language that play was workshopped and first performed at through Baker Kids
at the Gaslight Baker Theatre
