About the Show
Set in the emotional aftermath of September 11th, New York is a moving and unexpectedly funny collection of interconnected stories about ordinary people trying to navigate grief, fear, connection, love, and healing. Through deeply human moments, the play explores resilience, compassion, and the strange ways people reach for one another in times of crisis.
Casting Information
There are 15 roles available. Age, race, and in some cases gender are flexible. Actors of all backgrounds and experience levels are encouraged to audition.
Character Breakdown
DOCTOR (MOTHER)
A warm, welcoming woman who listens and reacts with great compassion and understanding, while maintaining a professional demeanor. Middle-aged seems right, but any age would work as long as she feels comfortable with herself and comforting to others.
TEACHER
Young seems right, but older might work too. Loves her students and isn’t afraid to show it. Wants to give them a positive lesson in the midst of tragedy.
FIREMAN
Anywhere from mid-20s to 40s. Should suggest the physical strength needed for the job. Hurting badly right now, but has an observant, skewed sense of humor.
PILOT (SUZANNE)
Probably best if middle-aged, but could be younger. A strong woman in a male-dominated profession, a pioneer in her field.
STEPDAUGHTER (SARAH)
17. By far the most mature and capable person in her dysfunctional family. Lower-class background, from a rough neighborhood in Queens.
OKLAHOMA (JED)
Most likely young, mid-20s. Beneath the physicality of a working man capable of strenuous labor is a deeply moral romantic wrestling with guilt and self-condemnation.
CAREGIVER
Likely in their 40s, though age and gender are flexible. Needs to deliver a blazing, rapid-fire comic monologue.
DUFF
Early 20s. Has a drinking problem he hides behind humor, comic riffs, and a stand-up style energy.
NEWSGIRL (DEVON)
A deeply conflicted young woman, though age could stretch older. Intelligent, quick, self-conscious, and hilariously aware of her own predicament.
JULIA
80. Lively and sharp with traces of her girlish self still present. Hungarian accent. Nervous, hesitant, and struggling with the moment she’s in.
PLANE GUY
Probably late 20s, though age is flexible. Deeply disturbed and delusional, but carries it lightly.
BABYSITTER
Must realistically appear around 12 years old. Distressed, angry, and uncomfortable being in a psychiatrist’s office, but ultimately reveals a deeply sweet and vulnerable nature.
VIGIL (STEVEN)
Late 30s or early 40s, though flexible. Youthful energy. Gay and occasionally campy, but mostly grounded and sincere.
DETECTIVE (TONY)
Likely late 40s or early 50s. An NYPD homicide detective whose investigative method relies on deep empathy and understanding of victims.
MARY
40s or 50s, though flexible. A warm, nurturing career woman with a dry sense of humor.
Casting Note
There are 15 roles in the play, and age, race, and in some cases gender are very flexible. The PLANE GUY could become the Plane Girl. The NEWSGIRL could become a Newsguy. Additional flexibility may exist for other characters pending licensing approval.
