Gaslight Baker Theatre is excited to announce auditions for Matilda the Musical, a heartwarming and hilarious show that celebrates courage, kindness, and the magic of imagination.

Adult Auditions (Ages 15+)

  • Wednesday, April 2 at 6:30 PM
  • Saturday, April 5 at 1:00 PM

Youth Auditions (Ages 6-14)

  • Thursday, April 3 at 6:30 PM
  • Saturday, April 5 at 10:00 AM

Callbacks (By Invitation Only)

  • Wednesday, April 9 at 7 PM

🎭 Audition Details

Adults (Ages 15+):

  • Auditions will consist of:
    1. Singing – Prepare 16-32 bars of a song in the style of the show.
    2. Dancing – Be prepared to learn and perform a dance combination.
  • Live Accompanist Provided – HIGHLY recommend bringing sheet music.
  • If using a backing track, email it to Marketing@mygbt.org in advance for us to program into the system.

Youth (Ages 6-14):

  • All children will:
    1. Sing a pre-selected section of “Naughty” from Matilda the Musical.
      • Lyrics Sheet

Naughty- Audition Lyrics

  • Background Track:
    1. Participate in a dance audition – wear comfortable clothing and shoes.
    2. Read scenes from the script.

⚠️ Please Note: There are ONLY 12 adult roles and 10 child roles available.


đź”” Callback Information

Callbacks will be held on Tuesday, April 8 at 6:30 PM (by invitation only).

At callbacks, you will be asked to:

  • Sing specific song cuts (see list below).
  • Read scenes from the script – materials provided during callbacks.
  • Dance – Mrs. Wormwood and Rudolpho candidates will perform a partner dance.

Callback Songs:

  • Matilda – Sing the entirety of “Quiet”
  • Bruce – Sing the beginning of  “Revolting Children”
  • Miss Honey – Sing a portion of “Pathetic”
  • Miss Trunchbull – Sing a portion of “Smell of Rebellion”
  • Mrs. Wormwood – Sing a portion of “Loud” (also perform a partner dance with Rudolpho)
  • Mr. Wormwood – Sing a portion of “Telly”
  • Rudolpho – Perform a partner dance with Mrs. Wormwood

Please Note: You may be called back for several parts. If we find the right person at auditions, callbacks for some characters may be eliminated.

Materials and music cuts will be provided with your callback invitation.


🎤 Character Descriptions

Adult Roles (Ages 18+)

  • Miss Trunchbull (Open to all Genders – Baritone/Tenor)
    A domineering, larger-than-life villain. Requires strong comedic timing, physicality, and singing.
  • Miss Honey (Female – Soprano/Mezzo)
    A kind, nurturing teacher with warmth and vulnerability. Requires a clear, lovely singing voice.
  • Mr. Wormwood (Male – Tenor/Baritone)
    Matilda’s loud, dim-witted father. A comedic role with strong character acting and physical humor.
  • Mrs. Wormwood (Female – Mezzo/Soprano)
    Matilda’s self-centered mother. Flashy, comedic role with bold dance numbers and a partner dance with Rudolpho.
  • Mrs. Phelps (Female – Mezzo/Soprano) A warm and kind-hearted librarian who loves Matilda’s imaginative stories. She is supportive and fascinated by Matilda’s intelligence. This role requires strong acting with a nurturing presence and light singing.
  • The Escapologist (Male – Baritone/Tenor)
    A mysterious figure in Matilda’s imagination. Strong vocals required; doubles in ensemble.
  • The Acrobat (Female – Mezzo/Soprano)
    A graceful, ethereal figure from Matilda’s imagination. Requires lyrical singing and movement.
  • Rudolpho (Male – Tenor/Baritone)
    Mrs. Wormwood’s flamboyant dance partner. Requires charisma, comedic flair, strong dance ability, and a partner dance.
  • Doctor (Male or Female – Tenor/Baritone/Mezzo)
    Delivers Matilda in a comedic singing cameo role.

Ensemble (All Voice Types)
Parents, teachers, and “Big Kids” at school. Seeking strong singers, dancers, and character actors.


Youth Roles (Ages 8-14)

  • Matilda Wormwood (Female – Mezzo/Soprano)
    A brilliant and imaginative young girl. Requires strong acting and singing.
  • Bruce Bogtrotter (Male – Tenor)
    A timid but brave classmate who stands up to Miss Trunchbull.
  • Lavender (Female – Mezzo)
    Matilda’s mischievous and playful best friend.
  • Michael Wormwood (Male – Baritone)
    Matilda’s dull, TV-obsessed older brother. Requires dry humor.
  • Classmates (Male & Female – All Voice Types)
    Amanda, Nigel, Eric, Alice, Hortensia, and Tommy – a lively group of students with unique personalities.

📧 How to Prepare

  1. Adults:
    • Prepare 16-32 bars of a song. Bring sheet music or email your backing track to Marketing@mygbt.org in advance.
    • Be prepared to dance – wear comfortable clothing and appropriate footwear.
  2. Kids:
    • Learn the provided section of “Naughty”
    • Be ready for dance and script reading
  3. Callbacks:
    • If invited, prepare the specific song cuts and scenes listed above.
